The abbreviations below are those we are using in the Verse Index, and for references elsewhere in the Guide.
S.B.L. (1881) SCHOOLBOY LYRICS
This was the private publication, containing 23 items, produced by Kipling’s parents.
ECH. (1884) ECHOES
There were 32 verses by Kipling, along with 7 by Beatrice (Trix), his sister.
D.D.&O.V. (1886) DEPARTMENTAL DITTIES AND OTHER VERSES
The first edition contained 11 Departmental Ditties and 15 Other Verses.
D.D.&O.V. (1886) DEPARTMENTAL DITTIES AND OTHER VERSES
The second edition had 12 Departmental Ditties and 19 Other Verses.
D.D.&O.V. (1888) DEPARTMENTAL DITTIES AND OTHER VERSES
The third edition had 14 Departmental Ditties and 27 Other Verses.
D.D.&O.V. (1890) DEPARTMENTAL DITTIES AND OTHER VERSES
The fourth Indian edition and first English edition (usually listed as fourth) completed the 16 Departmental Ditties, though one Other Verse was dropped and eight added to give 34 Other Verses. Some editions were named DEPARTMENTAL DITTIES only, in England and the U.S.A.
B.R.B.&O.V. (1892) BARRACK ROOM BALLADS AND OTHER VERSES
The first edition contained 22 Barrack Room Ballads, and 21 Other Verses (although some of these were ‘Ballads’). There were English and American editions in the same year.
B.R.B.&O.V. (1893) BARRACK ROOM BALLADS AND OTHER VERSES
The second edition had 4 more items. Again, some editions omitted the words ‘And Other Verses’ from the title.
S.S. (1896) THE SEVEN SEAS
The American edition had 51 items, while the English had 54. Readers may note more variation in the text than for other titles.
O.B.(1897-1919) OUTWARD BOUND EDITION
Published by Scribners, with the general title only in the first volume, these sets contained verse in volumes XI, XVII, XXI, XXVII and XXXIV.
E.V. (1900) EARLY VERSE
This title was used in various editions. The volumes contain some verse not collected elsewhere until Rutherford’s ‘Early Verse by Rudyard Kipling’ (see below).
D.L. (1900) EDITION-DE-LUXE
This edition includes SCHOOL BOY LYRICS, ECHOES and DEPARTMENTAL DITTIES and OTHER VERSE, in volume XVIII.
F.N. (1903) THE FIVE NATIONS
Successive editions have from 55 to 59 items.
H.E. (1911) A HISTORY OF ENGLAND
This prose work by C.R.L. Fletcher included 24 poems by Kipling.
S.B. (1912) SONGS FROM BOOKS
Published in America, this edition had 132 poems.
S.B. (1913) SONGS FROM BOOKS
The English edition included verses from the Just So Stories, and the Jungle Books, bringing the total to 174.
Y.B. (1919) THE YEARS BETWEEN
The first edition, in England and America, had 46 items. Later editions grew to 72 poems.
I.V. (1912) VERSE – INCLUSIVE EDITION 1885 to 1912
The first edition collected 480 titles.
I.V. (1919) VERSE – INCLUSIVE EDITION 1885 to 1918
There were two more items in this three-volume second edition.
I.V. (1927) VERSE – INCLUSIVE EDITION 1885 to 1926
After several new impressions of the second edition, including a single volume form, this third edition contained 520 poems.
I.V. (1933) VERSE – INCLUSIVE EDITION 1885 to 1932
The fourth edition contained 592 poems. Successive editions had added to the total, without omitting any items. Some American editions had two poems less.
SUS/BUR (1938-41) SUSSEX AND BURWASH EDITIONS The Sussex Edition was published in England in 1938. There are over 800 items, from headings to full poems. Most of the verse is in volumes XXXII to XXXV.
The Burwash Edition was published in the United States of America, in 1941. The same material is contained in fewer volumes, so that most of the verse is in volumes XXV to XXVIII. Changes were made in, both editions, to individual verses.
D.V. (1940) VERSE – DEFINITIVE EDITION 1885 to 1936
This edition, and innumerable subsequent reprints, contains 704 poems. It is taken, in the New Readers’ Guide as the standard text.
O.R.G. THE READERS’ GUIDE TO RUDYARD KIPLING’S WORK The first volume of guidance to the verse was published for limited circulation in 1967. With well over 1200 titles listed, it was to be followed by at least one volume of commentary and notes. This material was almost ready for publication, but cannot now be traced.
RUTH. (1986) EARLY VERSE BY RUDYARD KIPLING 1879-1889
Professor Rutherford edited a collection of over 300 poems, none of which are in the Definitive Edition. It is the second of our standard texts.
